Kevin Whitmer, the former Senior VP for Content, Expansion and Development at The Star-Ledger & NJ.com, and his wife, Regina, have formally launched their own consulting business. The firm, Whitmer Consulting LLC, will specialize in digital media and strategic communications.
Whitmer Consulting will offer clients access to a unique set of skills — a calling card from Kevin’s time as an editor who moved easily from nuts-and-bolts daily journalism to projects that regularly won the most coveted awards in journalism. Data and digital media, audience development and targeting, high-impact SEO performance and award-winning storytelling, writing and editing are among the services the Whitmers will offer.
The firm already is working with clients in media, health care technology and education.

‘Great teammates and great mentors’
Kevin Whitmer is widely known as the editor who steered The Star-Ledger/NJ.com out of the Great Recession to its position as an industry leader among news and information websites. Today, NJ.com draws more than 20 million unique visitors a month. During Whitmer’s time with Advance Local, the organization won three Pulitzer Prizes, 23 New York Emmys and just about every major award that honors News, Sports and Business journalism.
“I have been incredibly fortunate to work with great teammates and mentors. I learned from all of them and am proud to carry forward those relationships,” Whitmer said. “Leading an organization through crisis after crisis the past 16 years also gave me the skills and perspective to help any organization thrive in a rapidly changing digital world.
“And I don’t imagine many people have lived in real-time audience data as I have. Knowing what people read, where they read it, how to reach them — and then actually telling a story? We think that’s powerful.”
Regina Whitmer is also an industry veteran with decades of experience. A former newspaper reporter and editor, she currently writes and edits for nonprofit and corporate clients. Her real passion is doing developmental and structural editing with new authors. And copy editing. Always copy editing.
Regina has edited memoir and fiction books as well as corporate history books and training manuals.
Together, the Whitmers have more than six decades of combined experience, giving them the ability to understand and explain how media works from the inside.
Their business will be based in Plainfield and has merged with Regina’s writing and editing business.
